Here at Global Health Services, we have two goals:

It takes a certain type of staff person to remove disability as a hinderance to living a full and dynamic life, for adults with intellectual disabilities.

To make this goal possible we’ve come to realize through our experience that we need to work with people who are self-motivated, high energy, and enthusiastic about the work they do.

Naturally, it helps if that person is someone who feels they were called to serve people with special needs. While this hasn’t been our experience as a company, we’ve heard that often people with a relative with a special need often makes for the type of employee who can have a huge impact and help us achieve our goals for the individual and their parents.

Due to their life experiences, they often have a natural instinct when it comes to knowing what it takes to help individuals with disabilities, move beyond their limitations.

As we work very closely with individuals who are vulnerable, we also realize it’s not ideal to just hire anyone off the street to come in and sit on the couch and be on their phone. Nor is it ideal to hire people who are easily frustrated or moved to anger by the limitations of other.

Now we haven’t had the pleasure of working with a staff member who has a relative with special needs, but we have had the pleasure of working with several types of employees in our five years in business. Some of those experiences have been great, some mediocre and some less than favorable.

2-3 things that we went through:

Global Health Services was started by a mother and son duo with the aim to bring a high level of care to the individuals we serve.

As a family-owned business, we have worked with several family members and while working with family can be great for staff as they’re around people they’ve known their whole lives which provides a comfortable family environment, we can’t say from our experience that “family staff” are the key to helping the individuals living a dynamic life.

In times of staff shortage, we’ve also reached out to and worked with staff who are in need of work and have gone through the preliminary trainings necessary to be placed in a work environment that values their training and certifications. From our experience we can’t say that having the training, certifications, or even the need for work are the key to ensuring the individuals in our care are guaranteed a life beyond their limitations.

We receive continuous complements of gratitude and appreciation from the parents and professionals in our community for the care delivered by our top employees. This is a clear indicator for us that we have delivered on our promise.

Realizing we actually accomplished in many ways what we set out to achieve we thought it may be a good idea to take a step back and ask ourselves “how did we do it?”.

When we decided to look deeper into our delivery to determine what was the real cause of our success and more importantly what was the real cause the individuals in our care are stabilized and able to live a dynamic life, we found a few things. One we realized if we’re able to help the individuals we currently serve there is a possibility we could have the same impact on more people.

We realized that the individuals in our care are at their best when they are with certain staff. We decided to sit down with the staff and dig deeper into how they approached their work. What we discovered is that the staff caring for them do what they do for the love of the work. Granted, others can be trained to do great work but there is a great deal of selflessness required that can’t be trained or taught.

Our focus is on not just on hiring warm bodies to fill shifts. We want to team up with individuals who have a passion for serving those with special needs. People who we know can help us achieve our goal or removing disability as a hinderance to living a dynamic life, for adults with special needs.

We want the individuals and their parents to feel as though they won the mega millions when they found Global Health Services and our staff.

Now, how would you know if this job is for you?

If you’re unsure if this job is for you or aren’t sure if this is an opportunity worth pursuing, here are some things to consider.

And we understand, working with individuals with special needs is challenging on many fronts but at no time does that make it okay to mistreat them.

Here at Global Health Services, we like to think of ourselves as a company that goes above and beyond for the individuals in our care. So, if you’re someone who occasionally goes into your own pocket to pay for the individual to have treats, then there is a good chance you’d make a good fit here at GHS.

One of our keys to success for the individuals in our care is to ensure they get out into the community. Currently our individuals aren’t in day programs so it’s important we keep them active and in the community a couple days out of the week. If you’re someone who is creative and resourceful and are able to come up with fun opportunities for community engagement that incorporate exercise and entertainment, then Global Health Services is more than likely a good fit for you.
